River Keepers Staff Visit the Red River’s Sister River, the Dniester, in Moldova, Europe

Staff from River Keepers in Fargo-Moorhead, the Rodger Ehnstrom Nature Center (ENC) in Wahpeton, and the International Water Institute in Fargo will visit Moldova (a country in Eastern Europe) as part of a Sister Rivers project July 7-13, 2010. Sister Rivers is a multi partner collaborative project focusing on two international rivers, the Dniester River in Moldova and the Red River of the North. The primary goal is to recognize the importance of water resources in the world, because all water is connected. Both countries will utilize water as the common tie that binds, to raise awareness of international rivers and their role in our environment. River Keepers is the developing partner in the project

On this trip the five Americans will learn about the Dniester River by participating in a youth Dniester River Summer School and in the Dniester River Festival. They will also teach the Moldovan youth about the Red River of the North utilizing hands on activities. Through these experiences they will create tools and experiences for continuing teamwork.

A grant to begin this project was received from Museums & Communities Collaboration Abroad which is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State in partnership with the American Association of Museums. The project partners include: River Keepers (Fargo, ND USA), Eco-TIRAS (Chisinau, Moldova), Rodger Ehnstrom Nature Center which is a component of the Chahinkapa Zoo (Wahpeton, North Dakota, USA), and the Bendery City Museum of Ethnography and Natural History (Bendery, Moldova).
