South Dakota Spring Snow Goose Update

information is current as of Monday, March 22.

The snow geese continued to push north throughout eastern South Dakota over the weekend. There were an estimated 280,000 on Sand Lake Refuge on Sunday, with large flocks also seen in flooded fields between Columbia and Aberdeen , and Columbia and Groton . Large flocks were also reported near Conde. On Sunday, snow geese were observed from Gettysburg to Aberdeen . Duck numbers are beginning to build in the open water areas of the refuge, and in the open wetlands in the refuge area. Gulls and more bald eagles moved in over the weekend.

Most of the snow is gone in the area now. The main lakes on Sand Lake are still mostly ice-covered. Roads throughout the Brown County area are extremely wet, with water over many of the roads, and many roads closed. Please use caution when driving in the Sand Lake area.
